Mercy Mawia Musili
Mercy Mawia Musili is an agricultural development professional with over seven years of experience working across East Africa in science, systems design, and community-focused agricultural development. She specializes in creating efficient and inclusive agricultural systems, particularly within the seed value chain, to improve food security and support smallholder farmers.
Education & research
- Currently pursuing an MSc in Horticulture Seed Science Technologies at Poznań University of Life Sciences.
- Researches the use of plant-based essential oils as sustainable seed treatments to improve seed quality and reduce fungal contamination.
- Holds a Bachelor of Science in Horticulture with IT from Maseno University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Advanced Project Management.
Key experience
- Worked with the Kenya Plant Health Inspectorate Service, supporting seed inspection, laboratory sample collection, import/export permit processing, and compliance monitoring for seed production standards.
- Participated in industry forums and agricultural trade fairs to improve seed quality, market access, and farmer awareness of seed certification and health programs.
- Led field research and product development at Fairoils EPZ Kenya, conducting trials on essential oil crops and contributing to the development of FDA-approved Terpinen-4-ol oil.
Impact & leadership
- Trained more than 2,500 farmers in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda on Good Agricultural Practices, sustainable horticulture, and climate-smart farming.
- Contributed to major agricultural development projects funded by the World Bank and the European Union, supporting rural livelihoods and inclusive agricultural growth.
- Serves as Board Chairperson of G for Girls Initiative CBO, where she has strengthened governance systems and expanded educational and leadership opportunities for girls and young women.
